Continuities of Female Labour Migration in Past & Present

Postcolonial Migration, Care Work & Female Migrant Activism in Basque Country

The Basque Country has a long and complex migration history shaped by economic emigration and internal migration, political exile, industrialization and, more recently, international immigration. Women have played a central yet often overlooked role within these processes, particularly in domestic and care work.

This international workshop explores continuities and changes in female labour migration from a postcolonial perspective, linking historical trajectories with present-day realities. Bringing together researchers, activists and institutions, the workshop examines labour conditions, vulnerability and agency of migrant women, as well as their political activism in Bilbao.

Through lectures, discussions and participatory workshops, the event aims to foster dialogue, strengthen networks and contribute to more inclusive and intersectional narratives of European migration history within the FeMig.Lab project.
