The Frenj Synagoge

The last active Synagogue in Damascus

The Frenj Synagogue in the Jewish Quarter is the only synagogue in Damascus that is still in operation today. It is considered the first synagogue built within the city walls of Damascus. When exactly it was built is unclear, yet it is at least medieval in origin.

Rachel Kamoo guides Rania Kataf through the Frenj Synagogue, which is being renovated at the time of filming. Rachel actually lives with her family in Mexico, as part of a large Syrian-Jewish community. She has returned to Damascus to oversee the renovation of the Frenj Synagogue.
